Under the Nuclear Regulatory Act No. 29 of 2019, authorisation by KENRA is required to import or export nuclear materials and radiation sources into and out of Kenya.

To apply for import or export licence, complete GKLRP 1 form. The licence is valid for 30 days.

Requirements for import licence application

The applicant stated on the licence application must:

  • be the importer of the goods
  • be the stated licence holder or licensed dealer
  • be suitably registered and licensed with KENRA to deal with radiation sources and nuclear materials
  • ensure the enduser of the source has all necessary approvals and authorisations required by KENRA
  • sign and date the completed application.

Requirements for export licence application

The applicant stated on the permit application must:

  • be the exporter of the goods.
  • be the stated licence holder.
  • be suitably licensed with KENRA.
  • ensure the importer of the source has all necessary approvals and authorisations required by the regulatory authority in the receiving country.
  • sign and date the completed application.

Import/export licence fees

Fees apply for all import and export licence applications.

  • Import licence fee is based on 1% CIF of the nuclear material or radiation source.
  • Export licence: Each sources or material is charged KES 1,000.00
