Mr. John Otieno Opar

Mr. Opar John Otieno has been the Director for Compliance at Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA) since March 2023. A Production Engineer from Moi University, he holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Applied Radiation Protection from Institute of Nuclear Science in the University of Nairobi.

His area of specialty is in Safety and Security in Transport of Radioactive Material with extensive expertise to ensure regulatory adherence and operational excellence within the organization. He has undergone a fellowship in Safe Transport of Radioactive Material from Cairo, Egypt.

Mr. Opar is an accomplished professional with over 20 years of experience as a regulator with KNRA. Prior to his role, he has risen through the ranks and has previously served as the head of Licensing and Inspection directorates as well as the Regional Head for Mombasa, Eldoret and Mwingi. He played a key role in optimizing processes, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fostering a culture of safety within respective stations.

He has been the Kenyan Representative to the IAEA Transport Safety Standards Committee for a period of 6 years, assisting IAEA members states to enhance their legal and regulatory framework for radiation safety in transport.
