Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) Study Tour for Ghana and Kenya took place on 13th – 25th May 2013.

The Kenyan Delegation was led by the PS Energy Mr. Alex Wachira, Nyeri Senator Sen. Wahome Wamatinga , KNRA Board Chairman Hon.. Edick E.O Anyanga. Also In attendance  were NUPEA CEO Eng. Collins Juma and the  Director General  KNRA, Mr.  James Keter

The study tour provided participants with;

(i) hands-on examples of scientific and engineered measures focused on two major global security themes: 1) technical support for treaty verification and 2) securing chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) materials.

(ii)  an integrated nuclear security system including mock facilities that demonstrate the graded approach and will soon be updated to include a mock SMR (SMART)

– Integrated Security Facility (ISF)

– Sandia Pulse Reactor (SPR)

– Gamma Irradiating Facility (GIF)

(iii) SNL’s current research into thermal-to-electric power conversion technology in a configuration called the recompression closed Brayton cycle (RCBC) that uses sCO2 as the working fluid, rather than steam.

(IV)  how delay mechanisms are created and the latest developments in physical delay, as SMR plants will likely need enhanced delay mechanisms in their physical security systems because of smaller plant size and off-site response forces

The Kenyan delegation also held a Meeting with Interagency Partners:

– U.S. Department of Energy

– U.S. Department of Commerce

– U.S. Trade and Development Agency

– National Nuclear Security Administration

The Kenyan delegation held a bilateral meeting with NRC Chair Hanson on NRC International Activities among others.

KENYA NUCLEAR REGULATORY AUTHORITY HOSTS DISASTER RESPONSE BATTALION KDF STUDENTS APRIL 26th 2023

The Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA)  hosted Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) advance course participants from the Kenya Defence Forces Disaster Response Battalion (DRB)) to familiarize themselves with the Organization and its operations in Oloolua, Kajiado County.

The day long conversation provided the participants an opportunity to be sharpened with the requisite knowledge and competencies in safe, secure and peaceful utilization of Nuclear technology.

Additionally, they learnt on how the authority provides regulatory control in the operationalization of radiation and nuclear technology for socio-economic development of humanity.

The visit was graced by the Board Chairman Hon. Peter E.O Anyanga, the Ag. Director General Mr. James Chumba. The team from the KDF Disaster Responce Battalion was led by Major Charles Mulei.

Hon. Anyanga, underscored the importance of partnerships between the two institutions in responding to catastrophic hazards posed by the Nuclear and Radiological materials as well as developing future platforms for exchanging programmes.

The day long exercise, saw students from the Kenya Defence Forces taken through practicals in searching, identifying and securing concealed radioactive materials.

The Director General – Kenya Nuclear regulatory Authority invited applications, through an advertisement posted from  30th August to 13th September 2022, for pre qualification/registration of suppliers for provision of goods and services from interested eligible bidders for the period ending 30th June, 2024.

The prequalification exercise having been successfully done. Inauguration of Chemical, Biological, Radiological & Nuclear Risk Mitigation Center of Excellence (CBRNCoE)

The Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) risk mitigation center of excellence secretariat for Eastern and Central Africa (ECA) was launched on 2nd December 2021. The event was graced by representatives from a broad range of ministries and institutions in Kenya, diplomatic community from CBRN Centers of Excellence (CoE) partner countries, EU member states and other partner nations with a mandate to address CRBN risks.

The CBRN CoE is an initiative of the European Union (EU), jointly implemented by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC). The ECA region is on of the eight established across different regions in the world.

The 11 partner countries of the secretariat for the ECA region are Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda ,Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

The regional Secretariat is hosted by the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority at KASNEB Towers II offices in Upperhill, Nairobi.

Notice on Qualified Experts and Technical Service Providers

A Qualified Expert or Technical Service Provider is a recognised radiation safety professional capable of providing consultancy and advice to licensees and registrants of radiation sources on matters relating to compliance with safety and security requirements as required by the Nuclear Regulatory Act No. 29 of 2019. This includes occupational radiation protection, transport of radioactive materials, protecting the public, security of radioactive materials, training and drills, among others.

Criteria for recognition and inclusion on the list of Qualified experts/TSP can be accessed on this website.

Any successful applicants will have their name included on the list of TSP/Qualified Experts.

KENRA-NuPEA Consultative Engagement

The Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KENRA) and Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) convened a consultative meeting focusing on strengthening of collaboration in the operationalization of the Nuclear Regulatory Act No 29 of 2019.

The meeting was presided by KENRA’s DG, Mr. Joseph Maina and NuPEA’s CEO, Eng. Collins Juma, and attended by technical and legal officers from both organizations.

Discussions touched on development of regulations and policies related to nuclear safety and security, human resource development and capacity building, accession to international treaties and conventions by Kenya, among other issues.

KENRA and USNRC explores opportunities of enhancing cooperation

The Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KENRA) and United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) convened a consultative meeting to explore ways of strengthening collaboration in regulatory matters related to nuclear safety, nuclear security, legal and regulatory framework.

The meeting was presided by KENRA’s Chairman, Prof Eratus Gatebe and Haimanot Yilma of USNRC, attended by KENRA’s DG, Mr. Joseph Maina and technical officers from KENRA and AdSTM.

KENRA and USNRC agreed to hold further meetings to provide clarity and detail on specific areas of enhancing cooperation. Emphasis on human capacity building, development of regulations and regulatory documents as well as regulatory infrastructure. USNRC will conduct topical workshops in regulation of nuclear power program, emerging technologies in the medical and industrial sectors and nuclear safety and security.
